Guidelines for  Avoiding Back Problems

Decreasing the stress on your back can help you  avoid potential back problems.
By implementing the following principles, you will decrease  the stress on your back
and avoid repetitively injuring your back.

1.      Maintain the normal curves of your back.

2.      Plan your movements ahead of time

3.      Ask for assistance when appropriate

4.      Do not remain in one position for extended periods of time. Try to take a five minute break every hour.

5.      Maintain a wide, stable base while standing and lifting

6.      Pivot your feet, don’t twist your back

7.      Keep your stomach muscles firm while lifting

8.      Keep items close to your body when lifting or carrying

9.      Lift with your legs, not with your back.

It is important to remember that most back  problems are not the result of a single injury.
Most disorders are the result of:

1.      Poor Posture

2.      Bad Body Mechanics

3.      Stressful living and working habits

4.      Loss of flexibility

5.      General decline of physical fitness

If you have any questions whatsoever regarding  avoiding
back problems please do not hesitate to ask Dr. Columbus.
